Living on the Vanderun Shards has always meant a harsh life, subject to the seismic whims of its floating islets. Owners of a glyptoyak farm—creatures whose wool was used to make warm clothing and whose scales were crafted into flexible armor for the Svarograd porters—his parents entrusted him with watching over the herds, while his father molded cheeses from the milk of these gentle animals. But this life, as peaceful as it was solitary, was suddenly upended. When the Shard they had made their home on collided with a larger atoll, their farmhouse was completely destroyed. With no other options, the family was forced to enlist in the Expeditionary Corps to care for their menagerie aboard the Ouroboros. And when the exploration forces came face-to-face with sheep whose wool was made of cottony clouds, Kauri was promptly assigned to care for these new flocks.
