In a previous communication, we shared our desire to highlight the alternative formats developed by the community. To satisfy your appetite for diverse gameplay experiences, we wanted to give these variants more visibility and have collaborated with the team at Board Game Arena to integrate them. We are therefore pleased to announce that the “No Unique” and “Singleton” modes are now available in the deckbuilding section of the Altered website, as well as on Board Game Arena. You can start designing your decks today by following the specific construction rules for each format, and test your strategies on Board Game Arena. You will find the detailed rules for each mode in the rest of this article.
“No Unique” Mode
The "No Unique" mode offers a fresh perspective on Altered by focusing exclusively on Common and Rare cards. The goal is to highlight the fundamental structure of your decks and emphasize the natural interactions between cards played in multiple copies. In this format, the focus is on stability and consistency: without the element of surprise brought by Unique cards, victory relies primarily on mastering your game plan and optimizing your core synergies. It is the ideal playground for deckbuilders who enjoy refining the coherence of their archetype and testing the reliability of their favorite mechanics in a known and clear gameplay environment.
Construction Rules
- Deck size: Minimum 39 cards (40 including the Hero) to a maximum of 59 cards (60 including the Hero).
- Hero: 1 Hero.
- Card copies: Maximum 3 copies of cards with the same name (all rarities combined).
- Faction: All cards must belong to the same faction.
- Rarities: Maximum 15 Rares, maximum 3 Exalted, 0 Unique.
- Specific restrictions: No suspended or banned cards.
“Singleton” Mode
The "Singleton" mode invites deckbuilders to take on a stimulating creative challenge: each card can only be present in a single copy (for a given rarity) within your deck. This format transforms the way you approach Altered by celebrating diversity and creativity. By limiting card repetition, Singleton offers rich and constantly renewed games where unpredictability becomes a core mechanic. It is an experience where your ability to improvise and the knowledge of your entire card pool will make the difference. In addition to this new deckbuilding experience, we’re experimenting with a balancing tool where the Hero you choose for your deck determines the number of Uniques you are allowed to play with. We hope this feature will put the strongest Heroes to the test and allow sidelined Heroes to shine. With Singleton, every match becomes a unique experience where you must triumph through your ability to resolve any situation you encounter.
Construction Rules
- Deck size: Minimum 59 cards (60 including the Hero) to a maximum of 79 cards (80 including the Hero).
- Hero: 1 Hero.
- Card copies: Exactly 1 copy of each rarity for a card with the same name, with a total limit of 3 copies (e.g., 1 Common Kitsune + 1 Rare Kitsune + 1 Unique Kitsune).
- Uniques: The number of authorized Uniques varies based on the chosen Hero.
- Faction: All cards must belong to the same faction.
- Rarities: No restrictions on the number of Rares or Exalted cards.
- Specific restrictions: No suspended or banned cards.
