Competition Format
All matches will be played using cards from Set 1: Beyond the Gates through Set 4: Skybound Odyssey.
For the Last Chance Qualifiers, all matches will be played in a best-of-3, single-elimination format.
For the 32-players World Championship Finals, we wanted to deliver a spectacular show that highlights unique techniques, great deckbuilding, and faction diversity. To achieve this, we chose the well-known Conquest format, which adds an extra layer of strategy to the competition.
And no limited format? We decided to focus on a core-constructed tournament because we weren't able to offer a competitive limited tournament during Altered's first year. Next year will be a great opportunity to consider a limited format for the Altered World Championship circuit.
Conquest: Three-Factions showdown
- Each player must bring three different standard decks, each from a different faction. These decks will be submitted and locked before the final phase begins.
- All matches will be played with an open decklist.
- In the Best-of-3 format, players will each ban one of their opponent's decks before the match begins. This choice will be made simultaneously.
- When a player wins a game with one of their decks, that deck is considered validated and cannot be used again for the rest of the match. The winning player must switch to one of their remaining deck. The losing player can choose to stick with the same deck or switch to another one.
Stage 1: Group phase
- Players will be randomly sorted into eight groups of four.
- Each player will face the other three players in their group in a Best-of-3 conquest format.
- The top two players from each group will advance to the next stage of the tournament.
- The specific tiebreaker rules will be communicated before the tournament begins.
Stage 2: Double-elimination bracket
- All participants start in the winner's bracket. A player remains here as long as they keep winning.
- When a player loses a match in the winner's bracket, they are moved to the loser's bracket. A loss here results a definitive elimination from the tournament.
- The last player standing in the winner's bracket plays against the last player standing in the loser's bracket for the championship.
- The Grand Final will begin with a Best-of-3 match. If the player from the winner's bracket loses that match, a second Best-of-3 match will be played. Because it is their first loss, the two players are considered tied with one loss each. The winner of this second match becomes the champion.
REWARDS
We will soon be unveiling all the rewards for our top players, but we wanted to give you a sneak peek at the incredible work our talented artists have done for the World Faction Champions.
The Grand Champion will be able to choose one of their three factions to be crowned as the winning faction of the 2025 World Championship. The remaining top players will then be able to choose one of their factions, based on their final ranking, to become its Faction Herald. Every World Faction Champion card will be printed as a unique example.
The complete and final list of rewards will be unveiled at a later stage.
