Reading time
With Whispers from the Maze’s release on June 6, we’re updating the Comprehensive Rules to account for the new set’s rules and mechanics.
Effective date
The version 3.0 of the Comprehensive Rules will be effective starting Friday, June 6.
Updates to the Comprehensive Rules
- A new Section 8 Changes From the Previous Version has been added to detail all changes made between versions
Here are the main changes made with this version 3.0 :
New Rules
- Augment is a new keyword. It has been added to the glossary and detailed in Section 7.3.3 (causing a shift in numbering for the following sub-sections of Section 7.3).
- Scout X is a new keyword. It has been added to the glossary and detailed in Section 7.4.5 (causing a shift in numbering for the following sub-sections of Section 7.4). Also, Rule 5.1.2.c now lists “alternative costs”.
- Support abilities can now be reactions or passive abilities (marked by the I symbol), which is explained in the new Rule 2.2.11.e (causing a shift in numbering for the following rules of Section 2.2.11). It is also listed in the set of symbols (Rule 1.1.6.j and Section 7.1.5).
Rule Changes
- The timing to check whether a player wins (or if tiebreakers should start) has changed: instead of being continuously checked, it now is only checked at the end of Night, during a new daily effect called Check Victory. This has impacted several sections of the document:
- Rule 1.3.2.f has been modified to list Check Victory. • Section 1.3.3 (Ending the Game) has been updated accordingly.
- Section 4.2.5 (Night) has been updated accordingly, in particular detailing the new Check Victory daily effect.
- Section 4.3 has been renamed from “Ending the Game” to “Tiebreakers”, as all points not related to tiebreakers were moved to the Check Victory daily effect. The rules it contains have been updated to take Check Victory into account.
- Check Victory has been added to the glossary.
- The glossary entries of Clean-up, Daily effect, Night and Tiebreakers have been updated.
Other rule changes:
- During the Clean-up daily effect, landmarks in excess are not discarded but sacrificed instead. Rules 1.3.2.f and 4.2.5.c have been modified accordingly.
- Tokens leaving the Expedition zone do not join their new zone anymore. Rule 2.1.e was modified to reflect that change.
- Rule 7.3.23.b was added to make it explicit that a sacrifice of which the discard atomic action has been modified is still a sacrifice.
Consult the document to see the rest of the changes.
Added Card Rulings
The information below is displayed by set then by card name in alphabetical order.
Beyond the Gates
Arjun & Spike | Hero
Q: Can I use Arjun to Anchor a Character I played earlier?
A: No. Arjun ability is a Quick Action: you use it at the beginning of your turn, to provide Anchored to the next Character played that turn.
Q: Is Arjun ability resolved before or after the {h}, {j}, {r} abilities of my Character?
A: You choose! When you use Arjun's ability, it creates an effect "to be resolved" (an Emblem-reaction). Then, when you play a Character that turn, this triggers that reaction. After the Character is played, you resolve all (your) reactions (including {h}, {j}, {r} abilities) in the order of your choice.
Baba Yaga | Ordis | Rare
Q: Which versions of Baba Yaga are legal and in which format?
A: The Rare, Ordis version of Baba Yaga is currently suspended in all versions of Constructed Format (1vs1, 2vs2 and Free for All). It is still legal in the following formats:
- Draft 1vs1, 2vs2 and Free For All
- Sealed 1vs1, 2vs2 and Free For All.
All other versions (Common, Rare and Unique Yzmir, as well as Unique Ordis) are still legal in every format.
Beauty Sleep | All factions | Common & Rare
Q: Can I target a Character that's already Asleep?
A: Yes, but note that the Character will not gain Asleep again.
Celestial Blast | All factions | Common & Rare
Q: If my opponent controls the Spindle, Muna Bastion and a Character, can I first discard the Spindle to avoid paying the "Tough" protection it provides the Character?
A: No. First you target both (paying the 2 mana for Tough 2), then discard both.
Dragon Shade | Token
Q: Can I choose not to sacrifice my Icebound Landmark when it gains a 3rd Trial counter?
A: No. "If you do" doesn't mean you can choose, it means that if another effect prevents you from sacrificing the Icebound Landmark, you cannot create the Dragon Shade.
Foundry Armorer | All factions | Unique
Q: Which versions of Foundry Armorer are legal and in which format?
A: As of this ruling, all Foundry Armorer are legal in every format. The effects of some of them have been updated.
Grand Endeavor | All factions | Common & Rare
Q: If I move one of my Expedition on the same region as the other during Noon with "Grand Endeavor", do I win immediately?
A: No. As of May 2025, the game ends if, at the end of Night, during the "Check Victory" phase, a player’s expeditions are on the same region (or crossed each other). If you achieve this thanks to Grand Endeavor, your opponents still have the possibility of catching up during Dusk, or moving one of your Expeditions backwards with Sakarabru, etc. This replaces a previous ruling from July 2024 that stated the game ended immediately.
Haven, Bravos Bastion | Axiom | Rare
Q: Did the effect of this card change?
A: Yes, the Axiom version of Haven, Bravos Bastion has been unsuspended and errated with a new text as a result of a balance patch. The first printing of Haven, Bravos Bastion said "Your Characters have: "{r} I gain 1 boost.""
Q: Which versions of Haven, Bravos Bastion are legal and in which format?
A: The Axiom version of Haven, Bravos Bastion has been unsuspended. All versions of Haven, Bravos Bastion are now legal in every format.
Haven, Bravos Bastion | All factions | Common & Rare
Q: Which versions of Haven, Bravos Bastion are legal and in which format?
A: The Axiom version of Haven, Bravos Bastion has been unsuspended. All versions of Haven, Bravos Bastion are now legal in every format.
Helping Hand | Yzmir | Rare
Q: Which versions of Helping Hand are legal and in which format?
A: The Rare, Yzmir versions of Helping Hand are currently suspended in all versions of Constructed Format (1vs1, 2vs2 and Free for All). It is still legal in the following formats:
- Draft 1vs1, 2vs2 and Free For All
- Sealed 1vs1, 2vs2 and Free For All. All other versions (Common, and Rare Bravos) are still legal in every format.
Hooked | Axiom | Rare
Q: Can I first draw the card, then have the target switch Expedition?
A: No.
Issun-Bōshi | All factions | Common & Rare
Q: If I discard Issun-bōshi for its Support Ability, then play a Character, when is the boost placed on the Character?
A: When you play the Character, it creates a reaction (in a virtual resolution zone), then you resolve all such reactions (including for example the {j} abilities of the card played) in the order of your choice.
Lyra Festival | All factions | Common & Rare
Q: If I meet the conditions of Lyra Festival at the beginning of Dusk, but the Expeditions of my opponent are about to meet in the same region, what happens?
A: You win. At Dusk means the beginning of Dusk phase.
Q: If two players meet the conditions of Lyra Festival at the beginning of Dusk, who wins?
A: Since this is outside of the Afternoon, the first player in turn order will resolve the effect first and win.
Q: If a player meets the conditions of Lyra Festival during a 2vs2 game, what happens?
A: Their team wins.
Ouroboros Inkcaster | All factions | Common & Rare
Q: When exactly do I resolve the effect of Ouroubouros Inkcaster if it leaves the Expedition zone during Rest?
A: Rest is a simultaneous effect: all Characters leave the Expedition zone and go to Reserve or discard, simultaneously, which may trigger ""When I go to Reserve from the Expedition zone", then any effects awaiting resolution, including "After Rest" effects, are resolved in turn order. If your opponent needed to resolve a "Sabotage After Rest" (because of Monolith Legate for example), turn order might be important!
Ozma | Ordis | Common & Rare
Q: Did the effect of this card change?
A: Yes, the Ordis Common and Rare version of Ozma has been unsuspended and errated with a new text as a result of a balance patch. The first printing of Ozma said "{J} If you control three or more other Characters, draw a card."
Q: Which versions of Ozma are legal and in which format?
A: The Ordis Rare and Common versions of Ozma have been unsuspended. All versions of Ozma are now legal in every format.
Subhash & Marmo | Hero
Q: Can the "{I} At Noon —" Passive effects of a card placed in Reserve via Subhash & Marmo activate the same Noon it is put in Reserve?
A: No. At the beginning of the Noon phase, all the "At Noon —" effects are triggered simultaneously. Then, starting with the first player, each player resolves them in the order of their choice. If a card is put in Reserve via Subash & Marmo effect, it is too late for its "{I} At Noon —" effects to be triggered.
Teija & Nauraa | Hero
Q: When I play my first Character, if I control Teija & Nauraa, when does it gain the boost?
A: When you play the Character, it creates a reaction in Limbo (a virtual resolution zone), then you resolve all such reactions (including for example the {j} abilities of the card played) in the order of your choice.
The Kraken | All factions | Common & Rare
Q: Why does my card say "region type" instead of terrain?
A: The first printing of some cards used the word "region type". Future printings will use the word "terrain", to avoid confusion with a card Type (Character, Permanent, Spell, Hero, etc)
The Spindle, Muna Bastion | All factions | Common & Rare
Q: Did the wording of this card change?
A: Yes. The previous version said: "Characters you control have [TOUGH_2]. (Your opponent Spells and abilities that target me cost {2} more.)"
Treyst & Rossum | Hero
Q: If a token is sent to Treyst & Rossum's controller's Reserve during the Afternoon, does Treyst gain a Scrap counter as the token is removed from the game?
A: No. The tokens do leave the Expedition zone but never enter the Reserve (or discard pile if they were Fleeting). (This replaces a previous ruling from October 2024 that tokens did join the Reserve before disappearing, whilst still not activating Treyst.)
Trial by Frost
Arcolano Milk | All factions | Common & Rare
Q: If a Character I control switches Expedition to join the one in which is my Arcolano Milk (because of a card such as "Hooked!" or "Heimdall", does it gain the boost(s) and Fleeting?
A: Yes.
Q: If my Character is Gigantic (or becomes Gigantic because of Eat Me Energy Bars!) can it gain the boost(s) and Fleeting from Arcolano Milk if it's played in the other Expedition?
A: Yes. When you play a Gigantic Character, it joins both of your Expeditions. When a Character you control becomes Gigantic, it joins the other Expedition.
Ebenezer Scrooge | Muna | Rare
Q: Does Ebenezer Scrooge (Rare, Muna version) prevent players from playing cards for 0 or for free?
A: No. The minimum mentioned in Scrooge is for its own, specific reduction. It has been reworded to clarify it, previous versions said "Cards played from Reserve cost {1} less, with a minimum of {1}", new versions say "Cards played from Reserve cost {1} less, down to a minimum of {1}. (Other effects may still reduce it further.)"
Q: If I control the (Rare, Muna) version of Ebenezer Scrooge, can I still play a card for zero (thanks to Bountiful Meadow for example)?
A: Yes. When playing a card, you may apply all cost reduction in the order of your choice, so you can choose to first decrease thanks to Scrooge (down to 1), then decrease further with the Bountiful Meadow.
Floral Tent | Muna | Common & Rare
Q: If an Anchored Character was played in the other Expedition (the one without Floral Tent), became Gigantic (because of an effect such as Eat Me Energy Bars), then loses Gigantic, what happens?
A: First the Character loses Anchored, then it loses Gigantic. (It is not in the Expedition with Floral Tent anymore, but any event that would trigger because of it leaving the Expedition is not triggered, as this event was replaced.)
Floral Tent | Bravos | Rare
Q: If a Boosted Character was played in the other Expedition (the one without Floral Tent), became Gigantic (because of an effect such as Eat Me Energy Bars), then loses Gigantic, what happens?
A: First the Character loses its boosts, then it loses Gigantic. (It is not in the Expedition with Floral Tent anymore, but any event that would trigger because of it leaving the Expedition is not triggered, as this event was replaced.)
Floral Tent | All factions | Common & Rare
Q: If my Floral Tent (Common, Muna version) is in the same Expedition as an Anchored Character and my opponent attempts to target both of them with a discard or send to Reserve effect, such as "Celestial Blast", what happens?
A: The tent will leave the Expedition zone, but the other Character will simply lose Anchored.
Frozen Reprocessor | All factions | Common & Rare
Q: If during Night, I control 3 Landmarks, and I have 3 cards, including one exhausted, in Reserve: can I sacrifice my Frozen Reprocessor and still keep all cards in my Reserve?
A: Yes. During Clean-Up, you select all Landmarks to sacrifice and all cards to discard simultaneously. When Frozen Reprocessor leaves your Landmarks, you've already checked your Reserve limit.
Gericht, Revered Duelist | All factions | Unique
Q: Which versions of Gericht, Revered Duelist are legal and in which format?
A: As of this ruling, all Gericht are unsuspended. The effects of some of them have been updated.
Gericht, Revered Duelist | All factions | Rare
Q: Can the Rare version of Gericht, Revered Duelist trigger an effect "When a Character gains Fleeting —"?
A: No.
Icebound Hollow | All factions | Common & Rare
Q: Can I choose not to sacrifice my Icebound Landmark when it gains a 3rd Trial counter?
A: No. "If you do" doesn't mean you can choose, it means that if another effect prevents you from sacrificing the Icebound Landmark, you cannot create the Dragon Shade.
Icebound Lake | All factions | Common & Rare
Q: Can I choose not to sacrifice my Icebound Landmark when it gains a 3rd Trial counter?
A: No. "If you do" doesn't mean you can choose, it means that if another effect prevents you from sacrificing the Icebound Landmark, you cannot create the Dragon Shade.
Icebound Pass | All factions | Common & Rare
Q: Can I target a card that's already exhausted to exhaust it again?
A: If an effect tells you to "exhaust target card in Reserve", you can choose a card that's already exhausted. However, it will not re-exhaust the card, therefore: • if the rest of the effect says "if you do", it will not happen. • this will not trigger effect such as "When you exhaust a card in Reserve"
Icebound Peak | All factions | Common & Rare

A: The first printing of some cards used the word "region type". Future printings will use the word "terrain", to avoid confusion with a card Type (Character, Permanent, Spell, Hero, etc)
Persephone | All factions | Common & Rare
Q: If an opponent's Expedition is in the same region as the Expedition in which I played Persephone (Common version), are the Characters of that Expedition in Forest too?
A: Yes.
Q: Why does my card say "region type" instead of Terrain?
A: The first printing of some cards used the word "region type". Future printings will use the word "terrain", to avoid confusion with a card Type (Character, Permanent, Spell, Hero, etc)
Snowball Commando | All factions | Common & Rare
Q: Do I need to roll the die if I choose not to exhaust any cards?
A: No.
The Nilam, Withered Tree | All factions | Common & Rare
