I sit beside Itoro while she writes the lines of her missive in black ink. I'm older now, so I'm allowed to stay up, unlike the other kids. And I don't know if this is something I'm worried about or looking forward to. Itoro sighs and puts a final point on her parchment. She blows on it to dry the ink, then wipes her stained fingers. She then hands her brush to me and unfurls a sheet of paper, placing weights on it to keep it flat. I look at the inkcaster's prints hanging on the walls, and I know I could never replicate her talent. She's the only one I know who can make her art come to life like that. But if I concentrate, maybe I can create a little playmate for Juju? I dip the brush into the ink, then touch it to the pristine paper. Maybe a crow or blackbird to fly around with my twittering bird?
