Altered World Championship Competitive Circuit

After Rinku's historic win as the first Altered World Champion last October, the second year of competition is officially underway. Get ready for new challenges and big changes! Your path to the Altered World Championships 2026 begins now.

Competitive Circuit Stages for 2025 & 2026

The Altered competitive circuit is leveling up in its second year! Our qualification system is now more widespread, with your journey starting directly at local game stores or through weekly online tournaments. We are dedicated to maintaining a pathway to the final stages that is both clear and accessible to every member of the community.

  • Q1-Q3 2026
    Qualification phase

This year, the qualification path includes a major new feature: you can begin your climb through success at local game stores or in weekly league tournaments held on Board Game Arena (BGA). This opens a brand-new avenue for dedicated Explorers who may not be able to travel to major events!

Every store that participated in the current edition's Gamefound campaign will be able to host one or more qualifier tournaments. The top players from these tournaments will advance to the Season Finals, which will be held online on BGA at the end of each season. In parallel, our partner Community Leagues* that organize regular online tournaments will also qualify their best players for these same Season Finals.

Stores will receive a specific communication in the coming weeks detailing the process for implementing the new qualifier events.

See below How to become partner for Community Leagues

  • Q1-Q3 2026
    Season Finals

Each Season will conclude in exclusive, invite-only Finals. Qualified players from both local game store events and online Community Leagues will battle it out in these stages to claim the first coveted Finalist slots for the Altered World Championships.

  • Q3 2026
    Seasons Invitational

After the three Seasons are complete (set 4, 5 & 6), an online Invitational event will be held. This provides a last-chance opportunity for the top performers from each of the Season Finals to secure their place in the World Championship Finals.

  • Q2/Q3 2026
    World Championship Qualifiers

We are committed to delivering the same memorable tournament experience as last year, and will therefore organize new in-person qualifier championships in 2026. These major tournaments will allow players to reconnect, compete in large-scale qualifiers, and earn a direct spot in the World Championship Finals.

More details, including tournament dates, organizing partners, prize structures, and participation guidelines, will be shared early next year.

  • Q4 2026
    Last Chance Qualifier

Just ahead of the World Championship Finals, a "Last Chance Qualifier" will be held, mirroring the successful format from last October. This event offers the most determined competitors one final opportunity to seize one of the last 8 available qualification slots and join the 24 already-secured finalists.

  • Q4 2026
    World Championship Finals

The Finals returns with a host of exciting changes! Which Explorer has what it takes to rise to the occasion and claim the world title from the reigning champion?

What's New: Updates for Season 2025-2026

Competitive Limited Format

Altered's first year proceeded without offering competitive Limited formats, but this second edition will be an opportunity to remedy that. We want to give more impact to Limited formats in the coming year: these formats—Draft and Sealed—will therefore be present at all stages of the competition, from your local store tournaments all the way to the World Championship Finals, in order to reward the best all-format players.

A Greater Role for Organizing Partners

The Altered community has demonstrated exceptional dedication for over a year, consistently enhancing the competitive landscape with regular online tournaments on BGA. Our goal is to transform these community initiatives into a formal gateway for the 2025/2026 qualification circuit, giving proper recognition to the valuable "unofficial" formats they champion.

To make this a reality, we’ve expanded the eligibility of our dedicated tournament support plan to include online events, allowing us to better assist committed organizers in their projects.

Becoming partner Community Leagues

If you are currently running regular online tournaments, or plan to start, we would be thrilled to partner with your league and enable your players to qualify for the Season Finals. To formalize this partnership, leagues must satisfy the following criteria:

  • You must have hosted a BGA tournament with over 50 players.
  • You must have hosted three BGA tournaments within a 30-day window over the past two months.
  • You must publish your competition results on 39cards.com.

If you meet or are approaching these criteria and want to partner with us, contact the Organized Play team at [email protected] to submit your project. This will allow us to connect with you, validate your partnership, and provide full details on the competitive play program for the year ahead, including player qualification methods and the support resources available to tournament organizers.

Rewards

Stay tuned! We'll soon be back with complete details on prize pools for the upcoming championships and visuals of this season's exclusive rewards. For now, here is a glimpse of the top prizes you can earn:

  • Exclusive Participation Token: Given to every player competing in the Season Finals.
  • Exclusive Alternate Art Brassbug: Awarded only to players who reach the Top 32 across all qualification phases.
  • Stamped Alternate Art Hexarchs: Presented to the champions of each faction. On top of that, a wealth of Unique cards will be winnable at every stage of the competition!

Organized Play Projects

  • Judge Program

While we could not fully launch the intended Judge Program during Altered's first competitive year, supporting our Judges remains a top priority. Your assistance is critical, and we are committed to actively backing the community that has formed around organized judging. Our key objectives are unchanged:

    • Streamlining official ruling and policy procedures.
    • Facilitating connections between Judges and tournament organizers.
  • Revising the Tournament Guidelines

Our immediate priority is publishing a complete update to the Tournament Guidelines. Among other objectives, this revision will focus on simplifying the End-of-Match Rules across all Altered formats, which we currently believe are too complicated for both players and organizers to easily understand and implement. This new version will integrate all insights gained throughout this first year of competitive play.

  • The Tumult Championship Returns!

We temporarily paused the Tumult Championships during Skybound Odyssey to manage changes in our distribution model. They are now set for a major comeback with the launch of Seeds of Unity, bringing an updated prize structure, increased format flexibility, and new developments for the Lore event! We will drop a detailed article early next year, but here is an exclusive visual preview:

The competitive season is officially resuming. We are incredibly grateful for your passion and commitment throughout the last season, and we hope today's announcements inspire you for the competition ahead!
